This is the first time I've attempted mass voices in a song - also, a lot of light and shade, with orchestrations, rock beat, stripped back, piano and controlling a lead vocal that could be dynamic. I think the end result was worth it, I hope you enjoy it.
Lyrics - took me a while to get them right.
Her bag is lying on the back seat,
the dashboard says two fourteen.
Rain keeps running down the windows,
turning street lights red and green.
He turns the radio down a little,
pulls slowly from the kerb.
They've known each other long enough
to leave some things unheard.
She tells him that the journey dragged,
he asks if she got any sleep.
The wipers mark a steady rhythm
as headlights cross the street.
She's been away just long enough
for something to have changed.
The road outside is just the same...
but tonight it feels strange.
They know this road, they know these turns,
they've travelled them before.
But somewhere in the silence
they're wishing there were a hundred miles more.
There's something sitting there between them
neither one of them will name.
Everything outside looks familiar
but nothing feels the same.
His phone lights up beside the gear stick.
She notices the glow.
She's never cared who called before
tonight she'd rather know.
Her hand moves towards the console,
but his hand is already there.
She pulls hers back too quickly
and pretends to fix her hair.
He saw her hand move towards him,
then watched it disappear.
She turns her face towards the window
as another junction nears.
He thinks perhaps he read it wrong.
She thinks perhaps he knew.
Neither sees the same small moment
from the other's point of view.
They know this road, they know these turns,
they've travelled them before.
But somewhere in the silence
they're wishing there were a hundred miles more.
There's something sitting there between them
neither one of them will name.
Everything outside looks familiar
but nothing feels the same.
The corner shop is dark now.
There's the crossing by her street.
Another minute, maybe two,
and the journey will be done.
He asks her if she's tired.
She says, "A little -- You?"
Then the turning that will take her home
comes slowly into view.
He sees the turning coming.
His hand stays on the wheel.
No traffic coming towards them.
No headlights at their heels.
He could indicate and take it,
leave everything as before.
Instead he drives straight past it
and she turns to him once more.
She said, You missed my turn.
He smiled and said, I know.
She looked and replied, you did that deliberately.
He grinned but said nothing
Do you fancy a coffee?
She touched his hand and
replied, I think I would
