This is my latest just uploaded to YouTube. This is the retelling of the olk folk tale by Hans Christian Andersen - The Snow Queen. It's an orchestral production - the vocal is a Countertenor, one of the highest ranges in a male vocal. Enjoy.
The lyrics are my own - here they are so can follow the song more easily.
A wicked troll once made a mirror,
That turned the fairest things to grey.
It showed the worst in every kindness,
And laughed the good in men away.
He raised it high above the rooftops,
To show the heavens what he'd made.
But in his hands the mirror shattered,
And scattered darkness through the day.
Two young lovers, Kai and Gerda,
Watched the winter from their door.
They'd shared their dreams beneath the stars,
And promised there would still be more.
But something caught within Kai's vision,
A shard too small for eyes to see.
And where his heart had once held kindness,
A colder stranger came to be.
The Snow Queen came beneath the moonlight,
Her silver sleigh upon the snow.
She called to Kai across the silence,
Come with me, there's much to know.
She kissed his brow, and all his memories
Faded like the dying day.
He never turned to look for Gerda
As the sleigh bore him away.
Gerda searched the empty pathways,
Through the woods and frozen streams.
She asked the travellers on the highway,
Have you seen the boy I love?
An old woman warned of mountains
Where no living soul should go.
But Gerda took her cloak and travelled
Towards the kingdom of the snow.
[Chorus]
Climb the mountain, don't fear the dragon,
Let sword and spear strike at its heart.
Raise your shield against the fire,
No wicked queen shall keep us apart.
And for her crown, I'll shed no tear!
Above the pass, a shadow gathered,
Great wings swallowed up the sky.
A roar came rolling down the mountain,
And flames went racing through the night.
Gerda stood against the fire,
Her iron shield before her face.
The dragon wheeled above the valley,
Then plunged towards that lonely place.
[Chorus]
Climb the mountain, beware the dragon,
Its wings cast shadows across the snow.
The Queen sits high on her frozen throne,
Guarding secrets no mortal should know.
But tonight her kingdom falls!
[Instrumental]
Beyond the gates, the halls were silent,
No guards, no footsteps, not a sound.
A thousand stars of frozen crystal
Hung above the icy ground.
And there sat Kai among the shadows,
Moving pieces on the floor.
He looked towards the girl who'd found him,
As though they'd never met before.
Kai?
He raised his eyes.
Do I know you?
It's Gerda. I've come to take you home.
He turned away towards his puzzle.
I have a word I must complete.
She knelt beside him in the stillness,
And touched his hand between her own.
Do you remember summer evenings?
The roses growing by the door?
The promises we made together?
He whispered, Tell me something more.
And as she spoke, her tears fell softly
Upon the hand she wouldn't leave.
He looked at her, and said her name.
Gerda?
And she began to breathe.
[Chorus]
Up the mountain, into the thunder,
Fire above and the ice below.
Steel against the wings of winter,
Hear the mighty dragon roar!
Bring down the Queen of Snow!
The Queen stood watching from the doorway,
Her frozen crown beneath the light.
She saw the broken spell between them,
And neither spoke nor turned to fight.
Gerda rose and held his hand.
Come, Kai. It's time for us to go.
And side by side they left the palace,
Walking slowly through the snow.
He took her hand, and she took his,
And neither looked behind.
They walked together down the mountain,
With all the time in the world.
