Plot: The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk, is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock, a Vulcan, was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before. The human adventure has begun again.

This was expected to be a flop, but it actually turned out to be pretty good. J.J. Abrams did an excellent job directing this.

Not wild about all the fake "lens flares' throughout that come for no apparent reason, Abrams was trying to make his Star Wars aspirations come true.

The whole "alternate reality" thing as a device doesn't work since they have undermined it from the start, clearly they don't understand the concept of a timeline skewing off on another tangent as so well explained by Doc Brown in Back to the Future 2, (Nothing which happened before the skew, changes in the new tangent, dumbasses - at least they didn't re-cast old Spock.) The Spock we know would have been doing everything in his power to fix the skewed timeline and accomplish his original mission in the 'prime' universe. He's got a ship, he knows how to use it to time travel. But instead he just accepts a new role in the skewed timeline.

I dismissed this movie originally as no more than 'ST 90210' but over time I have moderated my view. If you shut off your brain and just enjoy the entertainment aspects, it wears a bit better. But, shutting off your brain has never been what ST is supposed to be.
