Bavarian Red Cabbage

Bavarian Red Cabbage
1 1/3 pound head red cabbage
3 tablespoons butter or bacon drippings
1 large onion, minced
1 large tart apple, peeled and sliced
1 cup hot water
1/3 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
5 whole cloves
1 teaspoon salt
Shred cabbage. Melt butter in pan in which cabbage is to be cooked. Add onion and cook slowly until soft and yellow. Add remaining ingredients; toss together. Cover; cook just until cabbage is wilted. Uncover; cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
